The First Runner-Up is created on two main pillars: Representation and Perseverance. 
 
The First Runner-Up is a children's book following the life of young Ryder as she embarks on her first dance class as one of the only Black students. She faces ridicule and mocking for her uniqueness and skill level, yet her parents encourage her to stay rooted in her confidence. She goes on to practice, becoming first runner-up in her in-class dance competition.
